Giving with Open (Cheerful) Hands

Have you ever noticed that generosity is a highly valued ideal in the Scriptures? Moses commanded, “Give generously” (Deuteronomy 15:10). David sang, “The righteous give generously” (Psalm 37:21). Paul, like Moses, exhorted, “Give generously” (Romans 12:8), and then explained, “God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).

In light of all this, have you ever wondered why the Word of God talks so much about generous giving? There are several things we can say about this, but let me boil it down to the main thing: God is a gracious giver, and our generosity emulates him.

If you’ve been wanting to grow in your generosity—giving with great joy rather than a sense of expectation or duty—just remember God’s generous grace to you. He gave you his Son to rescue you from sin and death (John 3:16) and he faithfully supplies all your needs, day in and day out (Philippians 4:19). Oh, he is so gracious! And when we marvel at his grace, we can’t help but to give with joyful hearts. Let your heart awe over God’s grace this week; he’ll take care of growing your joy in giving.
