I recently bought a new flashlight from Costco. You know, one of those oversized, heavy-duty ones that look like a police officer’s baton. I’ve been needing something brighter for night-time use when I take my dogs out for their final potty break before bedtime (It’s pretty rural where we live, and that means dark nights and critters you don’t want your dogs to chase, hence the need for light). Needless to say, I was completely blown away the first time I used it. It was like a helicopter spotlight on our front lawn! The light completely drove out the darkness.
Jesus said his followers are like these flashlights in our dark world. “You are the light of the world," affirmed Jesus, "A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16, emphasis mine).
Dear fellow Christian, if there is one thing we're called to do while we're still on this earth, it’s to glorify God by letting the light of Jesus shine through us. As his followers, his light is already within us. All we're called to do is to let it shine. How? Through good and loving deeds that bless others. With this in mind, how can you let the light of Jesus shine through you this week?
